[ARCHIVED] Late afternoon house fire in Danville, Va.

The Danville Fire Department was dispatched to 735 Holbrook Ave. at 4:34 pm this afternoon to a house fire where it was reported that a bedroom was on fire and a child was possibly still inside. On arrival of the first unit fire crews found smoke coming from the rear of the one story house. After getting further information that everyone was, in fact, out of the structure fire crews proceeded with making entry and extinguishing the blaze. During this time a primary search of the house confirmed that no one was inside. A quick knockdown was achieved and the fire was contained to the one room. The remainder of the house was exposed to the smoke and soot. Two children had minor burns on their hand and the Danville Life Saving Crew treated them at the scene and they were not transported to the Emergency Room.

The Fire Department responded with three engines, one ladder apparatus, a Safety Officer, a Command Officer and three Staff Officers. In all 18 fire personnel were on the scene for 1hr and 15 minutes. All six members of the home were displaced and the Red Cross is working with them to assist in any way they can. Also, Brad Harville with the Burn Fund will be contacting the family and assisting them further.

Damage to the home is considered moderate in nature. The Fire Marshal's office investigated the incident and it was determined that children playing with a lighter was the cause of the fire.
