The Danville Fire Department was dispatched to 325 Piedmont Dr. at 6pm this evening to a reported outside natural gas leak caused by a construction worker severing an underground line. On arrival there was the smell of gas and the leak could be heard escaping from the broken line. As a precaution, workers were evacuated from Dunham's for about an hour. Fire crews stopped all traffic in the area and rerouted customers leaving the mall for safety reasons. The gas department sent employees to the scene and they were able to stop the flow with clamps and were preparing to make permanent repairs.
The Fire Department responded with 3 engine, one ladder truck, a chief officer and a safety officer. 16 fire personnel were on the scene for almost two hours assisting with scene safety and traffic control. Police officers set up blocks at each end of the incident. There were no injuries to civilians or city workers.
