A four-way stop is now in place at the intersection of Lynn and Newton streets. The change is a transitional step. In two weeks, the stop signs on Lynn Street will be removed, allowing Lynn Street traffic to flow uninterrupted through the intersection.
The changes are designed to improve response time for fire trucks leaving Lynn Street fire station.
Prior to the installation of the four-way stop, traffic at the intersection stopped on Lynn Street but not Newton Street, which resulted in loss of momentum for fire trucks as they approached the intersection with Newton Street.
The transition is being carried out in phases. For weeks now, signs have been in place at the intersection warning of the proposed change.
This week, stop signs with solar-powered flashing lights were put in place to create a four-way stop.
When the stop signs are removed on Lynn Street, the stop signs with flashing lights will remain on Newton Street for about six months to give people time to get used to the change. Standard stop signs then will replace the flashing signs.
