Lane closures are in place at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Main Street to allow for repair of brick pavers. Also, lane closures continue on Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge and on Central Boulevard at Sandy Creek.
To allow for repair of the brick pavers at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Main Street, the left lane on eastbound Memorial Drive has been closed from Spring Street to Main Street. The lane closure will be in place through Friday.
The lane closures on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge are a result of the pedestrian trail project, which began last month and will take another five months to complete. The right northbound lane of the bridge is being converted to a pedestrian trail. The trail will permit Riverwalk Trail users to go back and forth from the Main Street Plaza and trailhead on the south bank of the Dan River to the trail on the river’s north bank.
The project is part of the city’s River District Development Project, which is in its fifth year and has generated more than $100 million in private investment, outpacing public seeding by three-fold.
On Central Boulevard, repairs are underway to the bridge over Sandy Creek. The repairs will require alternating lane closures for both northbound and southbound travel over the next three to four months. Currently, both inside lanes are closed. The lane closures will be in effect 24/7.
Motorists are urged to slow down and be alert to altered traffic patterns or consider an alternate route.
