Everybody’s workin’ for the weekend! No plans yet? Don't worry! Here are the best things to do in Danville this weekend. Ready? Let’s go!

The weather forecast calls for another soggy weekend, so we once again lead this week’s list with indoor options for entertainment. The list also includes outdoor activities, but check with event organizers about their status due to the rain. For example, the ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville Speedway has been rescheduled for a later date.


150-YEAR HISTORY OF HIGH STREET CHURCH

When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: High Street Baptist Church, 630 High St., Danville, VA

This dramatization produced and directed by Fred Motley will honor the oldest African-American church in Danville and celebrate its 150-year history. An ice cream social will follow. The public is invited to this free event. For more information, call 434-251-2047.

LEWIS & CLARK: GREAT JOURNEY WEST

When: 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m. Sunday
Where: Danville Science Center, 677 Craghead St., Danville, VA

This is the center’s newest show. It tells the story of the perilous journey of Captain Meriwether Lewis and his close friend Second Lieutenant William Clark on the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the United States. Experience the danger and beauty of the unknown American West as it unfolded before the eyes of Lewis and Clark. Other shows playing are Wildest Weather in the Solar System, Sea Monsters, Forces of Nature and Magic Tree House. Check show times by visiting the center’s website at www.dsc.smv.org. The center is open Tuesday-through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with shows playing throughout the day. Cost for shows only is $6 for adults and $5 for youths 4-12 and seniors 60 and up. Due to the impending weather system and the safety of participants and staff, the Fall River Clean Up scheduled for this Saturday is canceled.


THE SOUL OF AMERICA

When: 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday
Where: Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, 975 Main St., Danville, VA

This is the next to last weekend for display of the oil painting exhibit of Sherman Watkins, a Danville native orphaned at a young age. He began to paint at the age of 15. Now 72, he has won 17 medals for his work, which features varied subjects from depictions of African-American history to portrayals of famous Americans to scenic renderings of nature. Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $4 for students ages 7 through college. Free for children 6 and under. Residents of Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County are admitted free of charge on the first full Saturday and Sunday of each month as a gift to the community. THE TRAIL OF MAUD GATEWOOD

When: 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m.-11 p.m. Sunday
Where: Mary B. Blount Library, 344 West Main St., Danville, VA

An art show featuring the work of Maud Gatewood, a native of Yanceyville and an art professor at Averett University from 1975 to1997. This show coincides with a larger exhibit of her work at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Maud Gatewood Studio Arts Center. A section of her paintings and prints will be on display in this show. Professors Diane Kendrick and Robert Marsh will discuss Gatewood’s artwork during an 1859-Coffeehouse Lecture on Oct. 13. AVERETT HOMECOMING FOOTBALL

When: Kickoff at 5 p.m. Saturday, pre-game tailgate party begins at 2 p.m.
Where: Averett North Campus, 707 Mount Cross Road, Danville, VA

This year's homecoming football game is against LaGrange! Halftime activities include introduction of the homecoming court and recognition of award winners and honorees. Come out and support your local Cougars! Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors. Children 12 and under are admitted free.
