Everybody’s workin’ for the weekend! No plans yet? Don't worry! Here are the best things to do in Danville this weekend. Ready? Let’s go!


RIVER DISTRICT FESTIVAL

When: Friday evening and all-day Saturday
Where: Throughout downtown and the Tobacco Warehouse District in the River District

The River District Festival is in its fifth year and has expanded beyond Main Street to include Spring, Union and Bridge streets and the new YMCA on Riverside Drive. Activities and events began Thursday and will resume Friday evening and continue throughout the day on Saturday. Music performances will take place throughout the weekend and all over the district. These performances are free. Walk around and enjoy the scenery. Danville Transit will provide a free trolley service on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with stops at the YMCA main entrance and at the intersections of Colquhoun and Bridge streets and Wilson and Bridge streets.

The festival culminates Saturday evening with a concert at the Carrington Pavilion featuring DJ Finesse, 120 Minute Band, Demetria McKinney and Grammy Award-nominated R&B singer Tank. Gates open for the concert at 6 p.m. Advance tickets for the concert are $10 for general admission and $15 for reserved seating. At the gate, tickets will cost $15 for general admission and $20 for reserved seating.

FAMILY MOVIE MATINEE

When: 10:30 a.m. Saturday
Where: Public Library, 511 Patton St., Danville, VA

A movie, popcorn and lemonade! Who could ask for more? Bring the family for this month’s showing of “Strange Magic,” a madcap fairy tale musical and comedy with computer animation. The movie is free. Contact: 799-5195, ext. 4


THE TRAIL OF MAUD GATEWOOD

When: 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m.-11 p.m. Sunday
Where: Mary B. Blount Library, 344 West Main St., Danville, VA

An art show featuring the work of Maud Gatewood, a native of Yanceyville and an art professor at Averett University from 1975 to1997. This show continues through Nov. 9 and coincides with a larger exhibit of her work at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Maud Gatewood Studio Arts Center. A section of her paintings and prints will be on display in this show. Free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.averett.edu


SACRED HEART SCHOOL "FALL FLING"

When: Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday
Where: Sacred Heart School, 540 Central Blvd., Danville, VA

Annual "Fall Fling" sponsored by the PTO includes bounce houses, carnival games, haunted house, cake walk, basket lottery, and silent auction. Children’s admission is $8 and includes a wristband for unlimited bouncing. Adults admitted free. Stew will be sold by the Quart ($6) or by the plate ($5), Hot Dog or Grilled Cheese plates ($5) available in limited amounts.


AVERETT UNIVERSITY MEN’S SOCCER

When: 2 p.m. Saturday
Where: Daly Field at Averett North campus, 707 Mount Cross Road, Danville, VA

The Averett University Cougars host Methodist University in conference action. The Cougars have won three consecutive matches and are now 4-2 in conference play, four points behind Maryville College for the top spot in the USA South. Methodist has won three consecutive matches and four of its last five. The Monarchs are 3-0-2 in USA South play and one point behind Averett. For more information, go to www.averettcougars.com.
