Danville Utilities reminds customers that a system-wide audit and survey of electric, gas and water meters continues. The audit, which began in July, requires contract teams of meter readers to visit each property to locate and inspect meters and collect inventory data.
TruCheck Utility Metering Solutions of Somerset, Ky, is the contractor.
“We have received a number of calls from customers, so we want to remind everyone that they will see the contractor’s vehicles in their neighborhood, and the meter readers will be coming onto their property,” Jason Grey, interim director of utilities, said Friday. “Currently, the contract teams are checking electric meters in rural areas and electric, gas and water meters in the city.”
Vehicles are labeled with the contractor’s name, and they are identified as a contractor of Danville Utilities. If there are any questions regarding the identification of the metering contractor vehicles, please call Danville Utilities’ main number at (434) 799-5270.
The meter readers are capturing the GPS coordinates for meter locations, checking the condition of the meters, and documenting abnormal conditions that may exist. The readers also are checking sites for signs of tampering or unsafe conditions.
In addition, the teams are checking transformers and following the service line to poles to check for low lines, limbs and other possible hazards that could result in an unsafe condition or service problem in the future.
Grey said the audit, which is about halfway complete, will validate meters. The data collected will be confirmed with customer information in the billing system. “It’s a process that only can be determined by on-site investigations,” Grey said. “It has been a number of years since we visited each property.”
When completed, the teams will have reviewed more than 80,000 electric, gas and water meters.
