Craghead Street will remain closed to through traffic for another four to five weeks to allow for reconstruction of a culvert under the street at Colquohoun Street.
Businesses in that section remain open, and events at the Community Market will continue as scheduled. The Public Works Department has worked with those businesses to provide directional signage to help their customers navigate through the work zone. Electronic message boards also are in place to direct traffic for Saturday’s Bright Leaf Brew Fest at the Community Market.
The street was closed to through traffic on Oct. 20 when the culvert became unstable. The culvert is a hand-constructed brick culvert with an arched top. Structural engineers are in the process of developing a design plan to stabilize the culvert and prevent possible collapse.
