Danville Parks and Recreation is seeking more entries for the second annual Community Holiday Light Show, but anyone interested in entering a display must act quickly. Entries are due Monday, Nov. 30. The show is open to anyone from families and groups of friends to school and civic organizations.
There is no cost to enter a display. Displays can be purchased or handmade, but inflatables will not be allowed.
The light show is a drive-through event and will be held in Ballou Park from Dec. 12 through Dec. 27 (closed on Dec. 24). Last year, more than 1,000 cars carrying approximately 3,500 people visited the park for the light show, which earned an award from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society for best new special event.
All displays should be set by Dec. 10. Parks and Recreation will supply power hookup, but entrants are responsible for supplying extension cords to run their light display.
This year’s show will be open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The show will be closed on Dec. 24. Santa will be on hand for photos nightly until 9 p.m. until Dec. 23.
During the two-week event, the public will be given the opportunity to vote on their favorite display. A donation will be made to the winner’s choice of non-profit.
The show itself is manned by volunteer groups, who earn a portion of the gate the night in which they work directing traffic through the park.
To enter a display or to volunteer, contact Danville Welcome Center at 793-4636 or visit PlayDanvilleVA.com and click on “Programs and Events.”
