The City of Danville will restore the “Stratford College” state historical marker that was erected 40 years ago on West Main Street to commemorate the college for maintaining the tradition of liberal arts education for women. The restoration will require temporary removal of the marker.
The marker is scheduled to be removed on Friday, March 25, and is expected to be reinstalled by Monday, April 4.
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources, which manages the state historical marker program, has approved the restoration.
The marker was erected in 1976. The marker reads: Stratford College (1930-1974) and its constituent preparatory school, Stratford Hall (1930-1954), maintained the tradition of liberal arts education for women begun in 1854 at the Danville Female College. Main hall was built in 1883 to house the Danville College for Young Ladies (1883-1897) and is a landmark also of its successors, Randolph-Macon Institute (1897-1930) and Stratford.”
