Library programs honor Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, staff at the Ruby B. Archie Public Library recently launched a new initiative entitled Seen & Heard designed to honor Danville’s local Black history, celebrate local heroes both past and present, and amplify current Black voices throughout the community.

Throughout the month of February, area residents are encouraged to visit the library at 511 Patton Street to engage with displays and resources honoring Black History Month, discover some of Danville’s most important people and places through special exhibits, and attend educational Black History Month programming.

The library is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

This month’s special programming includes:

  • February 10, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Real to Reel Flim Series featuring “Marshall”
    • Enjoy a movie viewing of popular documentaries and biopics with a discussion after the film. Share your thoughts on these influential moments and learn more about the history behind these powerful films. Ages 18 and up. Registration is required.
  • February 12, 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; March Through the Stacks
    • Join the march to learn about important historical figures in fun and engaging hands-on experiments and activities. Children of all ages are welcome. Registration is required.
  • February 17, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Special screening of the documentary “The Movement 1963”
    • View and discuss “The Movement,” a documentary about Danville’s 1963 civil rights struggle produced by Jonathan Parker. This documentary is also available for purchase or rent on Amazon Prime.

All programs are free; however, space is limited so registration is required. To register for any of these or additional library programming, call (434) 799-5195. For more information, visit www.readdanvilleva.org
