A motorist is dead following a vehicle crash on the Route 29 Expressway early this morning.
At approximately 2:10 am today Danville Police and rescue personnel responded to a vehicle crash on the Route 29 Expressway near the South Boston Road (Route 58) interchange. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Freightliner delivery truck was traveling south on Route 29 in the left lane when it veered over into the side of a 2006 International tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane. The Freightliner then went off the right side of the road and overturned just north of the Route 58 West exit. The driver of the Freightliner was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.
The driver of the International was not injured.
The Regional Crash Investigation Team is currently on scene, and the investigation is continuing. Southbound Route 29 traffic is restricted to one lane beginning approximately one-half mile north of Halifax Road. The exit ramp from Route 29 South going to Route 58 West is currently blocked. Motorists are asked to plan for delays or seek alternate routes at this time.
