Anglers Park will play host to an event-filled weekend featuring 5K, 10K and half-marathon races for cross-country runners, a rugby match between two ACC universities, and sanctioned mountain bike races.
The activities begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the fourth annual Green Legs & Hamstring cross-country races. Runners will tackle sections of the more than 25 miles of mountain bike trails known as Anglers Ridge.
At 11 a.m., a rugby match will be held between Clemson University and Maryland University. The schools chose Danville as the location for the match because of the quality of the facilities and the geographic location.
In addition to this match, Anglers Park annually hosts the Duke University MBA Rugby World Cup, which features master of business administration students at business schools all over the nation and from other nations.
The weekend of activities concludes on Sunday with the fifth annual “Shootout on Anglers Ridge,” which is a cross-country race in which mountain bikers of varying skills tackle stacked-loop, single-track trails featuring names such as Crooked Stick and Witchback. The trails vary in elevation and mix rock gardens and rooty climbs with creek crossings and smooth hard pack – almost all of which snake through woods.
Sunday’s race is sanctioned by USA Cycling, and racers will compete for cash prizes. Last year’s race at Anglers Park drew about 350 bikers.
Anglers Park is located at 350 Northside Drive and connects to the Riverwalk Trail. In addition to the trails and athletic fields, the park has a picnic shelter and restrooms.
