Stormwater Management

Post-construction stormwater management for a project may be as simple as a few stormwater inlets, stormwater pipes or other methods of stormwater collection and conveyance. However, more complex stormwater drainage systems may have to include facilities to detain and slowly release stormwater as well as facilities to remove a certain amount of pollutants from stormwater before it is released back into the environment.

Land Disturbance less than one acre

For projects disturbing land areas that total less than one acre, all applicable stormwater management regulations apply with the exception of the water quality regulations.

Land Disturbance one acre or greater

For projects disturbing land areas that total one acre or more, all applicable stormwater management regulations apply including water quality regulations. Land disturbances one acre or greater, or part of a common plan as defined by the Department of Environmental Quality, are required to obtain the Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP) General Permit for Construction Activities.
