To comply with the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) tests the quality of our waters. During the Water Quality Assessment process, it is determined if the water is clean enough for swimming, fishing, and other uses. If not, DEQ identifies the location, the concern, and the likely sources. Over the long term, DEQ, in cooperation with many other state and federal agencies, must develop and implement cleanup plans to restore the health of these listed streams.
In order to help combat these problems, the City of Danville has implemented the Urban Stormwater Quality Management and Discharge Control Ordinance and the Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance to guide residents, businesses, and contractors and protect our environment. However, public education and outreach is the key. The City of Danville cannot do this alone!
If you live in an area that drains to an impaired water, be mindful of your daily activities. We can all reduce our impacts on our local waters and improve their quality.
