Sherman Saunders

Current Term: July 1, 2020 to December 31, 2024

Member of City Council 1996-2000, appointed to Council in 2001 to fill an unexpired term, and elected again in 2004. Served as Mayor from 2008-2016.

Sherman M. Saunders was appointed to City Council in 2001 to fill the unexpired term of Council Member Daniel W. Marshall, III, who was elected to the Virginia General Assembly. Mr. Saunders had previously served on City Council from 1996 to 2000 and was re-elected in May 2004 and 2008. Mr. Saunders is retired, most recently serving as the Executive Director for Pittsylvania County Community Action, Inc.

Mr. Saunders serves on the Employee Retirement System Board of Trustees, Danville-Pittsylvania County RIFA, and Staunton River RIFA. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization and Roman Eagle Nursing Home. He is a former Board member of the Danville Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Saunders is past President of the Virginia Council Against Poverty, past President of Region III Community Action Agencies for the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C, and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dan River Business Development Center.
