[ARCHIVED] Tech Summit will detail trends for area businesses to watch

A daylong summit scheduled for March 7 in Danville will shine the spotlight on emerging technologies for wireless networks, mobile devices and protection from social engineering.

The Southern Piedmont Technology Council (SPTC) is conducting the summit, and organizers say the event will benefit any business or individual interested in today’s technology trends. As added incentive to attend, the SPTC is waiving the $25 conference fee for the first 40 to register and enter the discount code “Summit.”

“One topic that we are going to discuss is the consumerization of technology,” said Rachel Reynolds, an information technology specialist who is serving as the administrative liaison for the event. “New technology is developing first in the consumer market, and businesses are having to adapt at a rapid pace.”

Other information technology sessions will focus on the skills needed for today’s jobs, and efforts to recruit and prepare individuals for these jobs. David Ihrie, chief technology officer for the Herndon-based Center for Innovative Technology, will deliver a lunch keynote address on the convergence of cloud computing, mobility and cyber security.

The summit also will offer sessions on broadband technology trends, including its use in the medical arena, education and business.

A variety of leading technology companies will maintain exhibits at the summit, which will be held at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville. The event opens at 8 a.m. with registration and refreshments. The conference begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.
Registration is online at www.sptc-va.org/.

Following the summit, the SPTC will hold its annual Technology Stars Awards Banquet at the Institute. The banquet begins with a reception at 4:30 p.m., with the dinner and awards presentations from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Dr. Joey Faucette will be the banquet’s keynote speaker. Faucette is the author of the No. 1 bestseller, “Work Positive in a Negative World: Redefine Your Reality & Achieve Your Business Dreams.” He is a professional speaker and coach who has taught business professionals for more than two decades.

The SPTC will recognize the region’s technology achievements by presenting six awards, including the Chairman’s award and awards for innovation in technology for small and large businesses, green technology, education and outreach and entrepreneurship.

The banquet fee is $45. Reserved tables (eight seats) can be purchased with a sponsorship. Registration also is online at www.sptc-va.org.

SPTC is a member-based organization consisting of technology companies and advocates of the need for the region to invest in technology. These companies and advocates serve Patrick, Henry, Franklin, Pittsylvania, Halifax and Mecklenburg counties and the cities of Danville and Martinsville.
